For years, my relationship with my twenty-nine-year-old son, Daniel, had followed a draining, repetitive cycle. I was constantly paying his overdue utility bills, stocking his kitchen fridge with groceries he didn’t earn, and quietly watching him drift through his twenties completely devoid of ambition, responsibility, or direction. I was drowning him in comfort, shielding him from the consequences of his own stagnation, until my maternal patience finally snapped. I called it tough love. I convinced myself that throwing him into the deep end of reality was the only way to force him to swim.
