During what I assumed would be an ordinary trip to the hospital, my husband’s nurse discreetly pulled me aside and murmured, “I don’t want to startle you, but… CHECK UNDER YOUR HUSBAND’S BED when you return to the room.” I wasn’t ready for what I uncovered, and my first instinct was to grab my phone and dial 911. Even now, as I recount the events, my emotions are all over the place. Part of me wants to burst into laughter at the absurdity of it all, but another part?
That part keeps replaying every nerve-wracking moment from last Friday night. Ethan, my spouse, has been hospitalized for more than a week. He had surgery to correct an old injury that had been troubling him for years—a lingering hip issue that finally became unbearable.
He’s on the mend now, but the road to recovery hasn’t been smooth. Between managing work, looking after the kids, and ensuring he’s comfortable, my days have been… chaotic, to put it lightly. “Mom, when will Dad be home?” Tommy had asked that morning, absentmindedly stirring his cereal.
“Soon, sweetheart,” I reassured him, forcing my exhaustion to stay out of my voice. “He just needs to regain his strength first.”
“But I miss him,” Sarah had added, her lip quivering. “It’s not the same without him here.”
“I know, honey.
I miss him too. More than you can imagine.” I had wrapped them both in a tight embrace, inhaling their familiar scents, drawing comfort from their presence. Typically, I visit Ethan in the mornings or early afternoons while the children are at school.
But last Friday, my dad offered to keep the kids overnight. “You look like you need a breather,” he had said, his expression filled with concern. “When was the last time you got a full night’s rest?”
I genuinely couldn’t recall.
His offer felt like a lifeline, so I took it. I thought surprising Ethan with an evening visit would be a nice gesture, a way to lift his spirits. As I entered his hospital room, he glanced up from his phone and immediately stiffened.
“Hey,” I greeted him with a smile, placing my bag on the chair. “Didn’t expect me, did you?”
He blinked a few times before letting out a nervous chuckle. “No.
Uh… Didn’t you already visit earlier today?”
“I did, but I found some free time, so I figured, why not?” I shrugged, settling into the chair beside him. “I miss you, you know.”
“Sam…” he whispered, reaching out as if to hold my hand but stopping midway. “You shouldn’t… I mean, you must be exhausted.
The kids—”
“The kids are with Dad,” I cut him off, watching him closely. Something in his demeanor made my stomach knot. “They miss you, Ethan.
Sarah even cried this morning.”
