My Wife Was in a Coma and I Read Her Diary for Comfort, I Wish I Never Had

85

One night, feeling utterly drained and desperate for any scrap of her, I laid on her side of the bed, needing to catch the scent of her pillows. I reached into her nightstand drawer for her lotion, but my hand brushed against her diary. I’d known about it for years, but I’d never once touched it. That night, logic and boundaries failed me. I was desperate for a piece of my sweetheart, and in a moment of weakness, I opened it.

I wish I hadn’t.

As I read through entries spanning the last four years, I felt my blood run cold. There was no warmth in those pages—only a terrifying, suffocating rage. She had been keeping detailed records of every woman who entered my life, from hometown friends to innocent schoolmates and random social media followers.

She described them all as “ugly” or “talentless,” dissecting their every perceived flaw. But it went deeper than just journal entries. As I turned the pages, I realized she had been waging a silent, toxic war against me and everyone I knew.

I found notes detailing how she had created secret, anonymous accounts to stalk and harass these women. She would message them, accusing them of “disrespecting” our relationship, manipulating them, and saying cruel, weird things until they deleted me from their lives. She orchestrated it all behind my back to ensure that no woman could ever have my attention, all while playing the part of the perfect, supportive wife to my face.

I sat there, surrounded by the silence of our home, realizing that the woman I adored had been living in a curated reality of her own making. I realized that my “ideal” marriage was a performance she had directed, fueled by an obsession I never knew existed.

Now, as I sit here waiting for news of her condition, I don’t know what to do. The woman I thought I knew—the woman I feared losing more than anything—is a stranger. I’m mourning the loss of the wife I thought I had, and I’m terrified of the woman who might wake up in that hospital bed.

Do I confront her with the truth of her own secret war? Or do I bury the diary, keep my silence, and accept that I have been living a lie for the last four years?

I am reaching out to you because I am alone in this. I can’t speak to my family, and I have nowhere else to turn. What would you do if you realized your “perfect” spouse was the architect of your social isolation?
