A Special Father-Daughter Memory Made in the Sky

Single dad stories have their own unique charm. Some are laugh-out-loud funny, while others genuinely tug at your heart, because raising a child solo is no small feat. These dads juggle everything from school runs to emotional talks, all on their own, and their dedication is truly inspiring.

The Unexpected Moments

We were on a commercial flight when my daughter leaned over and whispered, “Dad, I think my period started!” Without missing a beat, I handed her the emergency pad I always carry in my travel bag, and she rushed to the restroom. Five minutes later, a flight attendant appeared by my seat with a sympathetic smile. “Sir, your daughter is asking if you have an actual pad. She says you gave her a panty liner.”

I turned red to the roots of my hair. I genuinely didn’t know there was a difference until that exact second. Thankfully, a kind woman seated a row behind us overheard and offered her own supply. When my daughter returned, she thanked both of us, sat down, and whispered, “Next time, just pack both, Dad.” Now I do.

Navigating the daily milestones often feels like learning a foreign language on the fly. I once struggled so hopelessly to teach my young kids how to wipe properly after going to the bathroom that I had to call my mother, humbling myself completely to admit I had no idea what I was doing. Then there was the hair: I have absolutely no clue how to style my daughter’s hair. I’ve taken advice from female friends, my female hairdresser, and the entire internet, but her hair permanently looks like she was dragged backward through a haystack. Her mom is no longer in the picture, so she spends one hundred percent of her time with me.

Early on, I took her to my own hairdresser, who styled it so it looked like a work of art. I took meticulous notes, snapped photos, and bought the exact same equipment and specialized products. Two days later? A total bird’s nest again. I used to worry people would think I was negligent, but now I don’t care—I know I’m a great dad.
