A Rude Waitress, One Night, and a Lesson I’ll Never Forget

68

The drive had been long, the kind that settles into your bones and makes the world feel frayed at the edges. My wife and I were exhausted, our patience stretched thin by hours of monotonous highway driving, when we spotted the warm, inviting glow of a small roadside restaurant. We weren’t looking for fine dining; we were looking for a pause—a quiet meal to act as a buffer between the exhaustion of the road and the rest of our journey.

The restaurant was modest, the kind of place that smells like old wood and coffee, but the atmosphere was brittle. The air felt heavy, as if the room itself were holding its collective breath. Our waitress was efficient but clipped; her eyes didn’t meet ours, and her movements were sharp, bordering on frantic. When the check arrived, I left a ten-percent tip—a standard, albeit modest, gesture—and my wife and I turned to leave.

We had barely reached the threshold of the door when a voice, jagged and raw, sliced through the quiet. “If you can’t tip properly, don’t dine out!”

My wife stiffened instantly, her face flushing with a mix of shock and indignation. “That was incredibly rude,” she whispered, her voice tight. “You should report her. She can’t talk to paying customers like that.”
