My MIL broke her hip and needed months of help. Her daughter lived only twenty minutes away but always had a reason she couldn’t come—meetings, errands, or simply “bad timing.” I tried not to judge, but every time I watched my mother-in-law struggle to sit up or reach for her walker, it became harder to ignore the silence from the person she had always described as her “closest companion.” When the doctor explained she would need constant support during recovery, I made the difficult decision to take leave from work.
