I met him on a quiet Sunday afternoon in a small town park in Ohio. An elderly man, thin, tired, dressed in a worn-out veteran jacket. In his right hand he held a tiny American flag, the kind you see during parades.
In his left, a small wooden box.
He kept looking at the road like he was waiting for someone. When I sat beside him, he gave a soft smile.
“Beautiful day, isn’t it?” he said. I nodded.
“Are you waiting for someone?”
His eyes watered.
“Yes. Someone very important.”
He opened the little wooden box. Inside was a faded photograph of a young nurse from 1972.
Beautiful smile.
Brown hair tied back. On the back of the photo were the words:
“Come back safe.
I’ll find you. —Emily”
He took a shaky breath.
“We met in Vietnam,” he said.
