On the bus, the old woman kept glancing at the young man in a white tank top, her eyes fixed on the tattoos covering his arms. Then she would quickly turn toward the window, muttering something under her breath.
The young man, lost in his music with headphones on, seemed completely detached from everything around him. The voices and the stares didn’t reach him.
But then the woman’s patience ran out.
The Confrontation
— “What has happened to the youth today!” she exclaimed.
“Why do you mark your body with such dreadful drawings?”
The young man gently pulled out one earbud and asked politely:
— “Ma’am, is something bothering you?”
— “Bothering me?” she scoffed. “With a body like that, you’ll never enter heaven.
It’s a terrible sin! How can the earth carry people who treat themselves like this?”
— “I haven’t done anything wrong to you,” he answered calmly.
